Feasibility and problems of DSL loop topology identification via single-ended line tests

چکیده

Abstrac t Digital subscriber lines (DSL) offer the possibility to deliver broadband services over the existing telephone network. Yet, before deploying DSL, the subscriber loops must be tested to see whether they can support high-speed data services, and at what rate. Single-ended automatic qualification is essential for achieving low-cost deployment of DSL, since it allows loops to be qualified in bulk without human intervention at the customer’s location. An even more ambitious challenge is to fully characterize the loop, i.e. to identify its loop topology (number of loop sections, length and cable type of each section). This paper discusses the feasibility and the problems of loop topology identification via single-ended measurements.

Loop makeup identification via single ended testing: beyond mere loop qualification

Digital subscriber lines (DSLs) offer carriers the possibility of exploiting the existing loop plant to deliver high-speed data and voice services. However, before deploying DSL, local loops must be tested in order to see whether they can support service, and at what level. In fact, there are many impairments that could disqualify a loop for supporting DSL services: load coils, excessive loop l...

Single Ended Loop Topology Estimation using FDR and Correlation TDR in a DSL Modem

The broadband capability of a DSL is dependant on the copper access network. Single Ended Loop Testing (SELT) is the most preferred and economical way in estimating the copper loop topology. The combined use of complementary code based Correlation Time Domain Reflectometry (CTDR) and Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) for accurate loop topology estimation is presented in this paper. The advan...

Line Topology Estimation of Indoor power Lines Using Multipoint Single Ended Loop Testing

Quality of broadband connectivity over a residential power line is dependent on its topology; which is very different from twisted pair copper used in telephony. In this paper methods to estimate the topology of a power line are investigated. A two step procedure comprising of a set of correlation time domain Reflectometry (CTDR) measurements based on Single Ended Loop Testing (SELT) and an ini...

On the estimation of the loop topology with SELT

Telecom operators base their DSL-tariffs mainly on the offered bit rate. The maximal achievable bit rate is different for each customer, because it depends on two parameters. On the one hand, the transfer function of the ‘subscriber loop’, which depends on the network topology (the cabling between the central office and the subscriber) and on the other hand the Power Spectral Density of the noi...

XVIII IMEKO WORLD CONGRESS Metrology for a Sustainable Development September, 17 – 22, 2006, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil FEATURE EXTRACTION OF ONE PORT SCATTERING PARAMETERS FOR SINGLE ENDED LINE TESTING

In order to identify if a subscriber loop is suitable for DSL service, the transfer function of the loop has to be estimated. Several measurement techniques exist, however Single Ended Line Testing is gaining much attention lately. This method allows only measuring at the central office side and yields a reflectogram. One of the critical issues in the estimation of the transfer function from th...
